I read that post a long time ago, but didn't think of anything... now when I read it again I started thinking...

What do you think is the place for short movies in the society and in the movie business?

Is it a way to learn? Is it its own artform? Is it subculture? Is it a way to prove your self and other people that "yes, I'm capable of making a feature... give me the money! ...please.."

Definitely.

Yes.

Not really.

Most if not all feature directors/film-makers start out by making shorts.

From my experience the average person on the street will turn their nose up at short films.
That's why there is very little platform for them. Shorts are mainly found on would-be directors showreels or at specialist film festivals.

Is it a way to learn?

It sure is. I've learned every time I've made a short. Artistically and technically. So far I've gotten (a bit) better with each one too.

Is it its own artform?

I think so. I think people have to look at it on those terms. Theyre not mini features. They are their own thing and should be treated and researced as such.

Is it subculture?

Hmm...well certainly there in film school, shorts are all most of us think about in terms of viable projects. Sure you could write a feature, possibley even work on someone elses, but no one is really in a postion to make one at this level. So in some ways it has aspects of a subculture. I've been to festivals where seemingly every-day folk just come to watch the shorts.

Yeah, hopefully. I know of people who of people whho've got feature deals off the back of successful shorts. Why not me?! It's a great way to get your name out there.

I think that girls should'nt wear ill fitting trousers as it tends to accentuate any flaws they may have.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I know some guys that were making (me also) shorts when they were teenagers or younger. They didn't think of being in the business when they grow up. Some of them are and lot of them are not. So i think it was (and is) some kind of subculture. Very small, but very strong in the same time. I just don't know was it more a subculture of horror/splatter movies than short movies... ll the films had a lot of blood and pieces of bodies! *laugh*

I think shorts are getting more popular. There definitely is a subculture going on, people attending festivals, seeing and making shorts 'for their eyes only'. But I've recently seen MTV making indie movies 'hip'. Quentin Tarantino was bombed the hippest person alive, and the most ill-watched-movie-goers I know were talking about Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction - movies they woulnd't 've heard of if it wasn't for MTV 'hipiezing' cult movies.

So what's the deal? I think shorts are getting more popular. You shouldnt try to ask money for shorts - and luckily many don't. There's no studio thing going on - it's all independent, it's all self made, and therefore many shorts can offer a cinematic experience the latest Hollywood films don't even bother to compete with.

Getting them watched by the masses is the tricky part though. But it will happen. You'll see.

the only short films that are seen by the mass public are music videos

short films should be shown before a main feature more often, possibly even make it compulsory.

that would improve the british film industry - it would create more jobs and help nuture talent.
